Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Application in Geochemical Research;
Dibenzofuran derived from the aromatic furans as major compounds in kerogen pyrolysate in organic-rich sedimentary rocks. The samples prepared in F1b+2 group will be used for the identification of the Dibenzofuran and its derivatives. The sources of aromatic furans with an alkyl group are fungi and lichen. The mass fragment ion of dibenzofuran are M/z; 139, 168.
Derivatives of the Dibenzofuran and its identification in GC-MS;
Dibenzofuran have some derivatives which come with an additional Methyl group in the benzene ring. They are Methyl Dibenzofuran with one Methyl group, Dimethyl Dibenzofuran, and Trimethyl dibenzofuran.
Methyl Dibenzofuran can be identified in the GCMS with a mass fragment ion of 181, 182, elute at the same time. It has three peak and the 2nd peak is higher than the other two peaks. The retention time of Methyl Dibenzofuran to appear is 8min approximately. As the retention time very with some factor like, column length of the GC, date of measurements, so, 8 min is not fixed for all laboratory. Methyl Dibenzofuran will elute just 1.4 min later of the Dibenzofuran in F1b+2 (aromatic kerogen samples).
Dimethyl Dibenzofuran is very difficult to identify because the biphenyl will elute at the same time with the same Mass fragments ion of 168 but major in M/z; 167. It makes the confusion. The mass fragments ion of Dimethyl Dibenzofuran are m/z; 195 and 196. It elutes 1.4 min after the Methyl dibenzofuran.
To distinguish from the biphenyl to dimethyl Dibenzofuran we have to extract with m/z; 167 which can make the difference between them.
The main Mass Fragments of Dimethyl Dibenzofuran is m/z; 196, 165, 181, 165. Here is the chromatogram of the Dimethyl Dibenzofuran peak of the above m/z.
