Hopane was discovered from a tropical tree of Southeast Asia named after John Hope, a British botanist in 1725-1786. The genus of the tree is Hopea. Then, hopea is named after John Hope. Hopanoids are a major component of plant waxes and resins.

Hopane is the most useful Biomarker in petroleum and geochemical research.

It is mainly derived from the tree like Hopea Genus-group. Hopanoids are relatively abundant in cyanobacteria, methanotrophic bacteria, and members of the α-proteobacteria, particularly the nitrogen-fixing eubacteria (Kannenberg and Poralla, 1999). Hopanoid contents in most of these microbes are ∼0.1–5 mg/g dry cell weight.
